You will find that the book tends to be a study in contrasts. There are some portions that are filled with action, suspense and intrigue. There are also sections which focus more on the environment that the characters are traveling through and which tend to be a bit slower paced.

The 2002 screen adaptation of the book tends to make these slower portions more interesting. This is because you are able to see the landscape and it makes it feel more real and immediate than reading it may. Text can be hard to follow for some people but the visuals developed by Peter Jackson and his crew tend to reach out and draw you in more completely than you might ever imagine. The movie uses extensive make-up, elaborate sets and computer generated imagery to make the sensation of being in Middle Earth complete. Even people who have read the book will find they experience scenes such as the siege at Helm’s Deep more deeply and will truly feel that they are in King Theoden’s hall as Gandalf faces down Grima Wormtongue in order to free the Rohirrim from tyranny.

Because the focus in on action and not description, it is harder to ignore the references to the two towers. The first is that of Sauron himself, deep in the heart and darkness of Mordor. The second is that of the wizard Saruman who has fallen under Sauron’s control. You see the extent of Saruman’s treachery which is first mentioned in the Fellowship of the Ring.

Finally, the story works well as a movie because it is easier to follow the travels of the different parts of the Fellowship. In the book, the companions split up at the end of the first movie. Boromir betrays the Fellowship by attempting to take the ring from Frodo by force. You understand why he does so after you meet the people of Gondor, including Boromir’s brother Faramir and the corrupt and deranged Steward who has cracked under the pressure of living next to Mordor.

This story allows us to find out more about the main characters and the reasons that they behave the way they do. We learn more about Aragorn and are introduced to characters such as Eowyn, one of the Rohirrim who plays a pivotal role in the third book. We learn more about why Boromir would be so desperate to possess the ring that he would have taken it from Frodo by force.

Although there were some criticisms surrounding the way Peter Jackson treated the storyline, for the most part this movie has been praised. There are so many memorable moments (such as the unforgettable Battle of Helm’s Deep) that you are set up to go into the third part of the story with a much better understanding of Middle Earth as a whole.

The television show contains certain character traits, especially personalities that a lot of the fans have come to love. This movie, does not give the full effect of the characters’ personalities, it only gives it to you in small spurts. And yes according to the show Aang is very serious at times as it shows in the movie, but he also likes to have fun, something the movie seems to have overlooked. Some characters that had the correct personalities but not quite the right looks were Prince Zuko and Iroh.

The plot was very similar to the show. The end and begin in pretty much the same spots as the show, but they middle parts have been altered a little. Such as in the movie Aang gives a speech to the Earthbender inside a camp, and this speech in the show is given by Katara. Stuff like that may or may not bother you, but it is different. To me, the unique pronunciations of names actually bothered me more.

The fighting and actions sequences are really what make this film. Much like the TV show, the movie definitely used real martial arts rather than simply copying from another film. The bending, the fight scenes, and the 3D effect were really good. Although the plot and characters may make you mad especially if you are familiar with the show, but the fighting is great.

So overall, there are high strengths and high weaknesses to this movie. Having said that, it is still worth seeing. A lot of people were bothered by the changing of races and things of that matter, it did not bother me I cared much more about the characters and the plot than I did about races. The movie is simple and straight forward. Rambo meets a woman he likes, she gets kidnapped, he kills all the bad guys to save her. Rambo 2 and 3 went the opposite directions, making the stories too complicated and in the end suffering for it. Those movies felt like bloated Hollywood excess, Rambo is raw, dirty, gritty, lean and relatively low budget.

The best of the series is still, of course, the first, First Blood. That film focused on the anger and disillusionment experienced by Vietnam War veterans upon returning home. It had something important to say. While the fourth in the series is more focused on extreme action, it’s also a very conscientious film with a social message just like the first.

The film takes place in Burma, a place that is, in real life, right now, in the middle of a very violent civil war. Stallone wanted to use his position as a Hollywood star to turn attention towards a real, pressing issue, and he chose Burma. In fact, he shot right outside of the real Burma and was given death threats by the very same army that he vilifies in the film.

The movie took a courageous effort to film, and it feels authentic. It’s also explosively violent in a way that is very real. It really drives home the suffering of the Burmese people, and because this is a real conflict, the movie feels much more socially responsible than the second and third films in the series. The end result is a movie that is both enthralling and conscientious.

The way the action is filmed is interesting. Rambo kills hundreds of bad guys, but it’s all shot in a sort of a realistic style that really sets it apart from the usual excess of action films. It feels, if not quite real, at least real enough that it doesn’t feel cartoony, it doesn’t trivialize violence, it actually deals with it head on.

The film is very pure in the way it develops. It’s really just action with some character development along the way. It’s mythical, Biblical in a way, and is just as pure an action film as classics like Commando, Robocop and The Road Warrior. In fact, it feels like it was made out of time, as if it could have easily been an eighties action film in many ways, back when the genre was in its prime.

This has really been Stallone’s time. Rocky Balboa, Rambo, and the upcoming The Expendables. He’s really back on top, and here’s hoping it stays that way.
