What An Employer Really Sees When They Read Your CV

When an employer reads your CV that has dropped onto the desk along with the huge pile of other CVs from hopeful jobseekers, you need to make sure that your CV stands out. It is not enough that you are an exceptional candidate, you need to be able to show in about 20 seconds exactly how good you are and how you the best candidate for the job in question.

20 seconds seems such a short time and very unfair really. The reason why the time is so short to make an impression is that people all very stressed, very short of time and everybody has more to do than they used to. Very often a junior person will screen the CVs that come into the business and you can be sure that their attention span is not what you would like it to be. If your CV doesn’t make the right impression straightaway, you will not be getting an interview.

Your career objective, personal profile, or career statement shows the employer very quickly exactly what you can do for them through a brief summary of your past career to date. You need to show anyone reading your CV exactly what you can do for them in which geographical area at what level and why your track record is so much better than anybody else’s.

Having a CV more or less than two pages long is not want an experienced recruiter is looking to see. They all used to having to read professionally written CVs that are written on two pages only. You do not want under any circumstances to be ringing alarm bells in the mind of a recruiter. Having the discipline and skill to be able to condense a persons entire career into just two pages sets professional job seekers apart from all the others.

The way you are feeling at any given time shows through in your writing. If you’re excited, happy, contented, positive, etc. your writing will reflect exactly that. Clearly the opposite applies. If you are down, tired, negative or depressed, then those emotions will show through in your writing as clearly as the nose on your face.

Recruiters expect higher standards now than they ever did in the past. Even if you could have got away with a poorly written CV in the past, it is certainly now not possible to get away with anything. ust as we expect higher standards and better service in almost every area of our lives, your CV is no exception. Make sure that your CV is professionally written or be prepared for lots of disappointment
